Atelier Marie
First released in 1997, Atelier Marie: The Alchemist of Salburg is the first entry in the Atelier series. In a fantasy medieval world of monsters and magic, adventures are often left to the chosen few, while the majority of people are content with their mundane lifestyles as long as the world is peaceful.
Salburg, the capital of the the capital of Shigsal Kingdom, is home to the famous Salburg Academy, which specialises in the study of the art of alchemy. The school is revered for producing some of the best alchemists on the continent.
An aspiring alchemist named Marlone - called Marie for short - attends this prestigious school.
Unfortunately, Marie is notorious for being the worst student at the academy, consistently achieving the worst grades in the school's history. Despite her continued efforts, Marie seems unable to fail at every turn. Her instructor, Ingrid, eventually decides that teaching Marie requires unconventional methods.
Under Ingrid's instruction, Marie opens an atelier to gain hands-on practice while contiuing her studies. Ingrid gives Marie a 5 year deadline to create a satisfactory item using alchemy. If successful, Marie will be able to graduate.
The game has 6 possible endings (with one more being later added in the Plus version). Depending on the player's actions, Marie may end taking one of a variety of different life paths, from further pursuing academia to becoming a conventional fantasy hero.
