Atelier Iris 2

Released in 2005, Atelier Iris 2: The Azoth of Destiny (released in Japan as Atelier Iris: Eternal Mana 2) is the seventh game in the series and a prequel, set centuries before Atelier Iris.

On the floating island of Eden, orphans Viese and Felt Blanchimont live together, studying alchemy under their mentor, Kruez. While Viese is a hardworking student, Felt has little interest in his studies, dreaming of exploring Belkhyde, a world that supposedly lies beyond the sealed gate that has stood in Eden's forest for longer than anyone can remember.

Upon Viese becoming a full-fledged alchemist, the two visit the nearby Marmel Forest so that she can make her first pact with a mana.
While there, a massive earthquake shakes Eden, causing large sections of the continent mysteriously disappear while monsters invade.
When fleeing from the monsters the two pass the resting ground of the Azure Azoth, a legendary sword in a stone said to be the guardian of Eden. Hearing a voice beckoning him, Felt succeeds in pulling it out.
The vision of a mysterious woman tells him to journey to the Altena Church in Belkhyde in order to restore Eden and prevent further disaster.

With the Belkhyde gate now unsealed, Felt sets out on an adventure to explore the other world, while Viese remains in Eden, to protect it while he is away, and further her alchemy studies in order to support his journey.

While it is the first game to only have a single ending, Atelier Iris 2 is the first game in the series to introduce a dual protagonist mechanic, with the player able to switch between Felt and Viese as playable characters.
